Mauricio F. Collao Quevedo

Mauricio is a PhD Candidate in York University’s Graduate program in Social & Political Thought

I am a PhD candidate researching the geosciences’ place in environmental thought and politics, focusing on recent developments in critical theory’s “geologic turn” and the emerging fields of Geoethics and Critical Geology. As such, my work is highly interdisciplinary, drawing together research in the social and the Earth sciences to inquire into the geoscientific basis of resource extraction, climate science, and environmentalism. I am also a Research Associate with York University’s Centre for Research on Latin America and the Caribbean (CERLAC) and have taught on the topics of critical environmental thought, the history of environmentalism, and the intersections of science and policymaking.

Why did you join ESAC?

Having regularly attended ESAC’s annual conference, I felt it was time to give back to this vibrant community of scholars by becoming more directly involved in the organization’s work. I’ve been especially drawn to ESAC’s commitment to fostering an inclusive, intellectually engaging, and collegial environment—one that actively supports environmental scholarship across diverse approaches and languages. As a Spanish-speaking member working to spotlight critical and innovative research emerging from Latin America, this has been particularly meaningful to me.
