Job Opportunity for Graduate Student Researcher of Food Program

  • Graduate researcher wanted on food access in Northern Manitoba for summer 2009 position.
  • Payment: $15,000 graduate student (PhD or master) summer contract to work with communities and community organizations to study community development towards food security, and food access in Northern Manitoba and develop evaluation report about the Northern Healthy Food Initiative (NHFI). NOTE: in addition $5000 in travel funds available (or more if required).
  • Application date: March 1, 2009 preferred but until May 1, 2009.
  • Start Date: May 4, 2009 (week of training in early May 2009 on community food assessment in Winnipeg).
  • Experience required: Excellent writing skills, Qualitative research skills, evaluation skills or willingness to learn, knowledge of food assessments or willingness to learn, Statistical analysis skills or willingness to learn, knowledge and appreciation of First Nations communities, appreciation of community gardening, nutrition education and food preparation/storage skills, requires travel.
  • Required: Must apply to U of M graduate school for either Natural Resources Institute or Faculty of Environment, University of Manitoba (supervisor: Dr. Shirley Thompson). To be eligible for University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship (UMGF) ($12,000/year) apply before March 2nd, 2009 - which normally provides scholarships for students above 3.75 GPA for two years starting September 2009. In addition, a research assistant position for the 2009/2010 school year at $25 per hour for 400 hours ($10,000) is guaranteed for work carried out in evaluating the NHFI, which could be your thesis focus or related to your thesis.
